アーツ前橋は、中心市街地にあった旧商業施設をコンバージョンして2013年10月26日に誕生した公立美術館です。ゆるやかな曲線を描く白いパンチングメタルで覆われた建物は、１階部分をアーカイヴ、カフェやショップなど市民が気軽に立ち寄れるフロア、地下１階を展示のためのギャラリーを中心としたフロアとしており、開放的で斬新なデザインとなっています。

滞在制作事業は開館前の2011年よりプレイベントとして開始し、開館後も継続して実施しています。2014年には、中心市街地の空きビルを改装し、滞在・制作のためのスタジオ「竪町スタジオ」を開設し、国内外よりアーティストを招聘しています。また、2015年からは、地元のアーティストの支援のため、群馬県にゆかりのあるアーティストを対象に、公募を行っています。

Arts Maebashi is a public art museum opened in 2013 and it is used to hold planned exhibitions and display the museum collection. Born by reconverting a former commercial facility, the building exterior now consists of an open and innovative design, covered with glass and white perforated metal panels that design a gentle curve on the external surface. The first floor includes a free gallery, a café and a shop, and provides a space where citizens can freely stop by, while the basement serves as the very exhibition space.

地域の特徴

前橋市は、関東平野に位置し、東京から北西約100キロメートルの地点にあります。雄大な裾野を広げる赤城山を背に、坂東太郎として名高い利根川や詩情豊かな広瀬川が市街地を貫流する四季折々の風情にあふれた美しい群馬の県都です。
また、詩人・萩原朔太郎の生まれたまちとしても知られており、文化薫るまちです。

Local Charm

Inokashira Park Kichijoji Art Museum Ghibli Museum, Mitaka map

Roppongi Art Night is held annually in Roppongi, approximately 30 minutes by train from Kichijoji. In nearby Inokashira Park, the cherry blossoms are a beautiful sight. Performances in the park at this time are crowded with people there to enjoy cherry-blossom viewing.
Yokohama Triennale takes place every three years. (The next one is scheduled to be held in 2017)
TERATOTERA, a community-based art project spread over Suginami, Musashino and Tama in Tokyo and centered around Koenji, Kichijoji and Kokubunji station areas on the JR Chuo line has taken place every year since 2009. In the Kichijoji Autumn Festival, the town bustles with mikoshi (portable shrines) and refreshment stalls.
The Japan Media Arts Festival is held at the National Art Center, Tokyo and other venues in the Roppongi area.

Places of Interest

Kichijoji holds top position in the ranking of most popular towns to live in Tokyo. The Kichijoji area is accessible from Shinjuku and Shibuya station, just a 20-minute train ride on the JR Chuo and Keio Inokashira lines, while even Tokyo station is only approximately 30 minutes away. From department stores and shopping arcades to theatres and art museums, the station area has extensive attractions, while it is also in an environment rich in nature and culture with Inokashira Park, Zempukuji Park, and the Ghibli Museum within easy reach.
