湯けむり、混在する聖と俗、移民文化。別府は、いたるところに不思議が顔をのぞかせる魔術的な港町です。大地から湯が湧きだし、窪みに溜まるように、アートがゆるやかに循環しています。
Enwrapped in steam and the mix of the sacred and the common, Beppu is also a place of migrant cultures. It is a bewitching port town which reveals strange faces at every corner. Just as steam ascends from the land and gathers in the valley, art slowly rises and circulates through ground.

JR小倉駅から電車で約1時間半
JR日豊本線でJR「別府」駅下車。徒歩1分。

地域の特徴
- ４月に「別府八湯温泉まつり」が開催され、市内100カ所を越える温泉が無料開放される他、扇山に火を放つ火まつりは市内各所から望むことが出来ます。
- 「７月に開催される「別府夏の宵まつり」では九州最大級の花火大会や納涼音頭大会などが開催。
- 11月には、公募によって集まったアートの展覧会やダンス、音楽、演劇など、多彩なアートプログラムが別府市内全域で発表される「ベップ・アート・マンス」が開催されます。
- 12月には10万人の人出を越え、音楽と花火がシンクロするユニークな花火大会「べっぷクリスマスHANABIファンタジア」が開催。

- “Beppu Eight Hot Springs Festival” is held in April, and over 100 hot springs in the district thrown open their doors for free. In addition the fire festival which sets the mountain Ougiyama ablaze can also be viewed from sites around the town.
- In July Beppu hosts the largest fireworks display in Kyushu as part of “Beppu Summer Eve Festival”.
- November sees the city taken over by “Beppu Art Month” with the presentation of art, music, and drama around the local district, gathered together through an open call.
- December draws crowds of over 100,000 people with the synchronization of music and fireworks in “Beppu Christmas Hanabi Fantasia”
Places of Interest
Beppu boasts over 2800 springs, spurting 137000 Kilolitres as Japan’s biggest hot spring region. Recognized as an International Tourism Hot-Spring Cultural City and an International Congress Tourism City it also plays stage to a wide variety of unique rituals and festivals throughout the year.活動スペース
